Aerial treatment of cheatgrass planned on BTNF near Pinedale
by Bridger-Teton National Forest
August 4, 2023
Aerial operations to control and eradicate cheatgrass infestations in the Pinedale area of the Bridger-Teton National Forest could begin as early as August 15, 2023. Aerial treatments are expected to occur on approximately 3900-acres of the Forest with 3000-acres being around New Fork Lake and Willow Lake. Treatments in general will be on the ridges in areas near Willow Lake, Fremont Lake, New Fork Lake, Boulder Lake and Burnt Lake.
Treatments will occur via helicopter. Some areas are being retreated this season, and a few new patches of cheatgrass that were discovered will have herbicide applied for the first time. The retreated areas are currently showing approximately 15% cheatgrass, which points to the success of previous operations. All treatments will occur via label direction and according to the Forest Plan and Environmental Impact Statement for Invasive Plant Management for the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Treatments by the helicopter are done in cooperation with Sublette County Weed and Pest District.
The intent of the project is to restore, maintain, and enhance habitat within the Pinedale Ranger District currently infested with this annual invasive or threatened by this invasive.
Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) germinates in autumn which makes treatment in August imperative. This invasive grass outcompetes native forbs and grasses for water and nutrients. This significantly diminishes the quality of wildlife habitat, especially in the critical mule deer and bighorn sheep winter range.
