Confidential Intermediaries can help Wyoming adoption cases

November is National Adoption Month, and Wyoming has a special law that lets families affected by adoption meet or share medical histories.
Adoptions are confidential in Wyoming, meaning only those with permission from a judge can see the records related to adoptions. In Wyoming, those people are called confidential intermediaries or CI’s, explains Confidential Intermediary Commission Chair Rose Fry.
Family members don’t always want to meet the adult child, parent or sibling the CI finds, but often they do meet. Sometimes they just answer questions about family medical histories.
Wyoming passed the law in 1992, making it among the first closed adoption states to use confidential intermediaries, Fry explained.
Five people in Wyoming are trained to do the research and connect family members.
