Limited Motorized Access Available to Middle Piney Lake
by Bridger-Teton National Forest
September 17, 2008
(Big Piney) – The Big Piney Ranger District of the Bridger-Teton National Forest is allowing vehicles less than 50-inches wide access to the Middle Piney Lake by traveling on the Middle Piney Road.
The Middle Piney Road flooded on July 23, 2008 approximately 300-feet below the Middle Piney dam, which prevented vehicles from accessing the lake area.
"There is adequate parking at the second bridge allowing people with vehicles wider than 50 inches to park and walk into the lake area," said District Ranger Greg Clark. The hike from the parking area at the bridge to the lake is approximately one and a half miles.
Visitors are asked to please use caution on the road as it has not been fully repaired to allow full-size vehicle use yet.
Additionally, the District reminds visitors to adhere to the travel routes up the North Piney area. "The top of the Wyoming Range has always been closed to motorized travel other than what is show on the travel plan, providing for both protection to the Big Horn Sheep Darby Mountain herd, which is starting to make a comeback, and providing for a non-motorized experience," said Clark.
Any questions on the Middle Piney Road or the travel plan on the Big Piney District should be directed to the District Office at 307-276-3375.
