The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announced EnCana as a winner of the 2007 Oil, Gas and Geothermal Development Environmental Best Management Practices (BMP) Award for Most Improved Environmental Practices in a Highly Developed Oil & Gas Field.
The award recognizes EnCana as an operator that conducts operations in an environmentally responsible manner, and was presented to EnCana at the Petroleum Association of Wyoming annual meeting in Casper this week.
“The innovative improvements we’ve made in the Jonah Field, really magnifies EnCana’s commitment and our responsibility to reduce disturbance, minimize environmental effects and find a balance between energy needs, wildlife, air quality, communities and Wyoming’s economy,” said EnCana Community Relations Advisor Randy Teeuwen.
EnCana’s enhancements include: • Funding a $24.5 million voluntary offsite mitigation fund to achieve a “net positive” environmental impact to offset surface disturbance from drilling on tighter well spacings • Implementing a flareless flowback system that eliminates the 1.2 tons of NOx emissions produced by a flared well • Building natural gas fired rigs, which cut NOx emissions by 90 percent compared to traditional diesel engines • Utilizing a quantum leap dehydrator that eliminates all VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from becoming emissions and 99.74 percent of all HAPs (hazardous air pollutants) • Laying down wooden oak mats that protect wildlife habitat by decreasing disturbance and hastening revegetation of disturbed sites • Operating a hub and spoke configuration on drill pads that decreases the number of production facilities • Hiring a team of scientists and reclamation experts to find techniques for immediate and proper reclamation • Utilizes centralized frac operations, which helps decrease location size, reduce traffic and decrease dust
