Cowboy Shop Classic

The 19th Annual Cowboy Shop Classic roping was held on Sunday, August 26 at the Pinedale Rodeo grounds. The event is by invitation only and features local team ropers ranging from children to grandparents.
104 ropers participated in six rounds on Sunday. Partners were drawn randomly for each round. Prize money was paid for the fast time of each round. The best Header and Heeler were awarded a saddle for catching the most steers in the shortest combined time for six rounds. The next six fastest ropers were also paid cash awards and buckles.
Random bounty steers were selected and if the ropers caught the steer in less than 10 seconds, they were given other prizes such as boots, hats, saddle pads, and gift certificates.
Team roping is a traditional rodeo sport with practical roots in the cowboy heritage of the area. When cattle in the open range needed to be doctored or branded, one cowboy would rope the head and another would rope the two hind feet to bring the animal to the ground.
In the rodeo version, a steer is released from a chute and given a head start by a line that the header cannot cross until the steer reaches the end of the head start and releases the barrier. The header then ropes the steer around the horn or head, dallies the rope on their saddle horn, and uses their horse to slow down the steer and pull him away from the heeler. The heeler then follows and attemps to rope both hind feet of the steer and stops his horse to pull the rope tight.
Time starts when the steer is released from the chute and ends when both ropes are on the steer and tight, as indicated by a judge dropping a flag. A fast run will take 5 to 8 seconds and most runs don't last more than 15 seconds. However, if the header breaks the barrier, there is an additional 10-second penalty. If the heeler only catches one hind leg, there is a 5-second penalty. If either roper does not catch the steer, there is a no time for the round.
