Good weekend for snow sports
SnoCross Snowmobile Race, Skiing
January 20, 2007
This is a great weekend for those who enjoy playing in the snow!
SnoCross Race this weekend: Up in Bondurant, Mountain West Racing is holding the Heart 2 Heart SnoCross races on Saturday and Sunday. This is an action-packed race with plenty of excitement. It’s all outdoors, with no seating provided. So bundle up, especially for the wind, and bring your own folding chair if you don’t want to stand. The races run from 9 am to 3 pm, across from the Bondurant school. The Pinedale Snow Explorers Snowmobile Club will provide concessions again this year.
Downhill Skiing: White Pine Ski Area reports 34” base of powder and packed powder. They have 19 of 21 runs open off the Great Spirit Lift. Ski and snowboard rentals are available at the lodge. New for this year are their luxury slope-side log cabins for those who wish to stay right at the ski area. Lifts run from 9 am to 4 pm. Adult all-day pass is a great bargain at only $32. They also offer many kilometers of free cross-country ski trails accessible right from the base lodge.
Snowmobiling: The Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail (CDT) trails in the Upper Green are groomed and have 2 to 3 foot base. Wyoming Range trails are also being groomed and parking lots are plowed. Snowmobilers: Here’s advance warning for week after next, on Monday and Tuesday, January 29-30, the IPSSSDR Sled Dog Race will be in town for the Pinedale stages. The Pinedale leg will be on the CDT in the Upper Green, sharing the trail with snowmobilers. They will stage out of the Upper Green snowmobile parking lot, so if you plan to sled those days, be prepared for extra activity on the trail and sled dog teams and vehicles in the parking lots.
Weekend Weather A strong storm system will bring light snow to western Wyoming Saturday through Sunday evening. Only an inch or two is expected in the western mountains. The eastern side of the state is expected to get more. The storm will also bring northwest to north winds, bringing down the wind chill factor. Anyone venturing outside to participate in winter sports, or just spectate, should dress in warm layers and with gloves and face coverings to protect from the cold wind. Roads will likely become snow-covered and slick this evening.
