Erica David wins top honors at National Science Fair

Two University of Wyoming-sponsored Wyoming State Science Fair finalists each won impressive honors at the recent Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Erica David, 16, of Pinedale High School, won the Grand Category Award and the overall top first place award in environmental science with her project, "Boards and Branches, Year Five: A Continued Multivariable Study of Snow Interception for Water Conservation." Best of Category came with a $5,000 prize and the overall first place was worth an additional $3,000. She also received a mobile technology-based notebook computer.
The Bureau of Reclamation gave David honorable mention award and a $3,000 first place prize from the United States Army.
Brandon Reavis, 16, Cody High School won a $10,000 scholarship from the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Foundation for outstanding achievement in the area of engineering. Reavis' project is titled, "3D Silhouette Laser Scanning: The Digital Reconstruction of Real-World Objects into Point Clouds."
The IEEE Foundation is the world's largest technical professional society, with more than 365,000 members in more than 150 countries.
"It is the first time in my experience with the state fair that both of our finalists have done so well in terms of awards at the ISEF," says Diane Gorski, state science fair coordinator and UW Department of Zoology and Physiology associate lecturer. "The overall first place that Erica received is an honor that only one other Wyoming student has ever won, and it really is quite an accomplishment."
David and Reavis were the sweepstakes winners at the Wyoming State Science Fair held on the UW campus in March. David received a $2,500 tuition scholarship from UW and Reavis, $1,250. More than 325 students from nearly 50 Wyoming schools participated in this year's state science fair.
