Wyoming sales tax revenues projections
Big Piney, Marbleton and Pinedale coffers will continue to gain in 2006 and 2007
April 3, 2006
According to recent information sent out by the Wyoming Association of Municipalities, the towns of Pinedale, Big Piney and Marbleton are projected to see significant increases in revenue from basic sales and use tax for fiscal years 2006 and 2007.
From the FY 2000 to 2005, Sublette County local governments’ common share of state sales and use tax increased 360.9%, from $2,467,705 to $11,373,526. Looking closer from 2004 to 2005, the change was a 39.3% increase in revenue, adding $3,208,446 into the coffers of the incorporated towns in Sublette County.
Government planners base sales tax projections on an annual increase of 2.7%, which is what the state CREG (Consensus Revenue Estimating Group) Report uses.
"The actual increase in nearly all parts of the state is much greater than 2.7%. The statewide increase from FY 04 to FY 05 was 14.6 %. For the first 8 months FY 06 is 19.8 % ahead of FY 05, but there is a great deal of variation, from 4.2% in Crook County to 59.4% in Johnson County," said George Parks, Executive Director, Wyoming Association of Municipalities. "We recommend that each city and town study both the long-term and short-term trends in your county before deciding how to budget for sales tax revenues. At the very least, we consider it unlikely that the high rates of increase will continue over the long term," he said in a letter to Wyoming municipalities.
