Citizens for Recycling Center - America Recycles Day - November 15th
The
Sublette County Recycling Center reminds everyone that America Recycles
Day is November 15th, and asks everyone to support the day by pledging
to step up their own efforts to recycle and buy recycled. Everyone is invited
to a celebration at the Sublette County Library in Pinedale from 6-8 pm
on the 15th. There will be a video on buying recycled products, the winners
of the 6th grade essary contest will be determined, and there will be a
discussion on how we can promote the use of products containing recycled
materials. In 1998, the Sublette Citizens for Recycling Center prevented
66 tons of reusable material from going to the Sublette County landfill.
So far in 2000, the Center has reclaimed 129 tons of recyclable materials.
The Center relys on volunteers, grants, and funding from the county, town
and private citizens to support their efforts, however that only covers
about 1/2 of their actual costs. The prices they receive for recyclables
varies with market conditions, and sometimes only covers the cost of shipping
the material to a larger collection site. The Center has expanded their
services by initiating a "curb side pick up" of corrugated cardboard from
business in Pinedale in January, and they also now accept #1 plastic bottles
and #2 plastic grocery bags. Most of all, the Center is asking for volunteers
to help at the Center and for donations to support their efforts, "Our
truck is old, the forklift leaks oil, the price of gas has risen substantially
and we need more help!" Donations to the Recycling Center are tax deductible.
The Recycling Center is located south of the Ambuland Barn in Pinedale
at 126 N Bridger, and is open daily from 10 am - 5:30 pm. You can contact
the Center by calling 307-367-444 or visit their web site at www.pinedaleonline.com/recycling.

Watch
Out for Deer & Antelope
Deer
migration has started, cautions the Pinedale office of the Wyoming Game
& Fish Department. Deer can be found along roads and highways a lot
more frequently than there were all summer, says Doug McWhirter. Motorists
should expect deer, antelope, and moose at any time, anywhere. Certain
areas typically are migratory crossings and see more concentrations of
deer, such as near the Cora Y, the Ryegrass Road south of Daniel near the
highway, along the highway north of Daniel, and the Rim & Hoback Canyon
areas. Essentially, McWhirter emphasized, drivers should be alert for wildlife
on and near roadways at all times. "It's always a good thing to just be
careful anytime. There's always that chance of being surprised by one you
don't expect," said McWhirter.
Hunting
season is still open in many areas. Hunters are reminded that it is required
by law to wear fluorescent orange while hunting. It is recommended that
orange also be worn by outdoor visitors, fishermen and hikers for safety
reasons during hunting season.
From
the Forest Service
"Visitors
to the area now should be prepared for changing weather conditions that
can close trailheads and roads" said Hank Williams of the Pinedale Ranger
District. The high country is at an "inbetween stage" with 6-24+" of snow,
making conditions a little too snowy to comfortably hike in and not quite
enough snow to ski in. Basically "you can slosh through snow with garters
all day, or ski in and ruin your skis on the rocks" summed up Williams.
The roads up to Elkhart and Big Sandy are still accessible by truck, but
you'll be driving through slushy snow at the top. Photographer's Point/Ecklund
Lake has about a foot of snow right now. The Forest Service reminds visitors
that mountain snowstorms can occur at any time, and backcountry users run
the risk of findiing their cars difficult or impossible to get out if they
leave them parked at the trailheads this time of year and they get buried
in snow. All National Forest campgrounds on the Bridger-Teton National
Forest are open for winter use, but there are no facilities available (toilets
or water). No fees are charged to stay in campgrounds after services are
turned off.
Also

Christmas
tree permits are now available for sale at local Forest Service offices.
What
about Winter Activities?
We're
not quite done with fall here, but many people are already getting ready
for winter fun. So just when will that start here? Typically we get the
first good snows by Halloween. We've already had a couple of dustings which
melted off fairly quickly. The mountains currently have anywhere from 6"-24+"
above 9,000 feet.
SKIING
White
Pine Ski Area anticipates being open for the season the week before
Thanksgiving. Their web site will be up soon with their schedule of events.
Cross-country
skiing should start in the next couple of weeks, after a good storm
carpets the valley floor. Cross-country trails are marked, but typically
not groomed, so be prepared to break some trail after heavy snowfalls.
(Skiing)
SNOWMOBILING
Snowmobiling
season won't really start for another month or so, typically in December.
We're right on the Continental Divide Snowmobile Trail, and there
are miles of great off and on-trail riding here, and over 400 miles of
continuous trail riding from Lander to Yellowstone available. Trail maps
are available from the local Chamber of Commerce and most Wyoming Visitor's
Centers. In January & February, the Pinedale Snow Explorers hold several
snowmobile
races and the Snowmobile Hill Climb. (Snowmobiling)
ICE
SKATING
Ice
skating and
hockey games typically start in late December -
early January, once we've had enough steady cold temperatures to freeze
up our outdoor rinks. (Hockey)
ICE
FISHING
Area
lakes are typically frozen up by January for avid ice fishermen.
SLED
DOG RACES
The
IRMSSSDR
(International Rocky Mountain Stage Stop Sled Dog Race) is held in
late January - early February. Pinedale is one of the Stage Stops along
this race. (IRMSSSDR)

Power
Outage #2 - Low flying plane
Last
Thursday's 2-hour power outage starting around 5 o'clock was due to a low-flying
plane which apparently clipped a powerline while flying over the mesa checking
out some antelope. The Colorado pilot was uninjured, but there was some
damage to his plane. Once again, a power outage threatened to shut down
a Pinedale Fine Arts Council performance at the Pinedale Auditorium. Last
month, the power came back on in time to allow the Coats to give their
outstanding concert. Thursday's piano performance by Barry Douglas proceeded
on time as well as Pacific Power once again saved the day and got the power
restored in time for the show to go on.
Last
Week for White Pine Pre-Season Ski Lift Tickets

Hwy
191/Pine Street Road Project
During
2001, the Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) plans to upgrade
1.3 miles of US 191 (Pine Street) through Pinedale. Project plans call
for milling the existing pavement and then placing a layer of new asphalt.
To improve surface water drainage, concrete "valley pans" will be replaced
at five intersections and "slotted drain" storm sewer inlets will be installed
at two sites. Last Tuesday, Bob Maxam, Resident Engineer for WYDOT,
met with the members of the Pinedale Area Chamber of Commerce to explain
the upcoming project. For more details of that meeting,

awaiting their final approval so they can proceed with the construction.
Once approved, the steel building will be ordered and brought to the site.
Concrete is scheduled to be poured in early March and the building ready
to be open June 1st. The new facility will be located in the lot just west
of the Driver's License building.
Game
& Fish Updates
Hunters
are reminded that Wyoming law requires that big or trophy game hunters
must wear at least one garment (hat, coat, jacket, vest etc.) of fluorescent
orange color. Both camo and solid orange garments are legal. The Game &
Fish receives calls every year regarding carcases being discarded by hunters.
"Hunters may think they are completing the food chain by returning the
carcass to nature's scavengers, but discarding the carcass along a road
is actually littering. It is also illegal" a recent Game & Fish press
release reminded hunters. To date, there have been 3 hunting accidents
in Wyoming regarding firearms, one a fatality, but none in our area. The
Game & Fish advises against keeping a loaded firearm in the vehicle
stating that the most common place for firearm accidents is in vehicles.
